In a recent statement, Asif Nazrul, a member of the Advisery Committee for National Awards and the country`s legal Adviser, confirmed that the number of Independence Awards this year will be fewer than 10.
This marks a change from the past when even controversial institutions like the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had been recipients of the prestigious award.
Asif Nazrul revealed this decision after attending a meeting of the Advisory Committee at the Secretariat today. The meeting was led by Education and Planning Adviser, Wahiduddin Mahmud.
"Previously, controversial institutions like RAB had been awarded the highest honor of the country. However, that will not happen this time," Nazrul said.
"This year, the number of Independence Awards will be less than 10."
Wahiduddin Mahmud, the Education and Planning Adviser, explained that this year’s awards will honor individuals and institutions that have made remarkable contributions to the betterment of society.
"The committee has suggested some names, which will be sent for final approval from the Chief Adviser," he added.
However, despite the decision, neither of the Advisers disclosed the names of the recipients for this year’s Independence Awards.
